Diamonds

Probably the most famous diamond quote is "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" as sung by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

It seems as if humankind has always attempted to define and illustrate the beauty of a natural diamond in so many words. Attempts have been noble, if not entirely successful. Because the truth is, one can never hope to truly capture all the luster of a diamond in just a few sentences. Movies have been made, novels have been written and songs have been shared, and even in these instances, justice cannot be done. “Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without one.”
-Chinese Proverb

The name diamond comes from the Greek word "adamas" meaning invincible which probably refers to their supreme physical qualities.

Few interesting facts about diamonds are-

1. In traditional Hinduism diamond with some kind of flaw or flat or uncut should be avoided because it carries bad luck.

2. Arabic diamonds are said to attract iron even better than a magnet.

3. Diamonds are typically billions years old. The oldest diamonds on our planet were found in Australia.

4. Every year 3, 5 millions tons of rocks get blasted with purpose of finding diamonds.

5. Diamond resists attack by acids or bases

6. Diamonds were first discovered in India and then in Brazil

7. Diamond is regarded as the hardest material on Earth and its hardness is set to 10, which is the hardest on Mohs scale of mineral hardness.

8. Other diamonds can only scratch diamond.

9. Diamond is a birthstone for people born in the month of April.

10.Only colorless (white) diamonds are transparent.

Mary of the Burgundy was the first known recipient of a diamond engagement ring when she married with Maximilian I.

It doesn't take a genius in order to realize that diamonds are the most expensive pieces of jewelry. Some diamonds have their price in million of dollars, and the most amazing part is that there are always people ready to pay these absurd sums of money to get their hands on desired stone.

The first reason that makes diamond so expensive is its rarity. It is true that diamonds are quite rare when generally speaking, especially some colored diamonds like for instance red, pink, and blue diamonds. The other factor is their beauty, and by beauty I mean their sparkle and their brilliance. Shine of the diamond is so unique, and it looks so spectacular., and we mustn't forget that people just like the rats, are attracted to shiny objects. Well you don't get something quite shinier than diamonds. The factor of beauty is also connected with the rich and long diamond history. Ever since the diamonds were first discovered people have not only admired their beauty but have also given them divine properties like bearers of luck, stones that ensure invincibility to kings and nobles that wear them and so on.

A Diamond is Forever”
-NW Ayer Agency

One particular diamond producer got all the credit for this sentence that forever changed an industry, but the actual statement was delivered by an advertising agency. Before this impressive marketing campaign, diamonds were not necessary identified with romance, marriage or engagement. They were considered decorative jewelry and used for a variety of purposes. This campaign has made diamonds extremely popular and desirable, and turned diamond rings into only worthy sign of love that lasts forever.

In 2000, De Beers and the Steinmetz Group unveiled 'The Millennium Star', a 203.4 carat, D-colour, internally and externally flawless pear-shaped diamond, arguably the most valuable diamond in the world. The most expensive diamond in the world, weighing 7.03 carats was sold for staggering 10.5 million Swiss francs ($9.49 million) in 2009, which is the highest price paid per carat for any gemstone at auction. The Koh-i-Noor (Unestimated, is one of the British crown jewels) is 105 carats diamond that was once the largest known diamond in the world. The Koh-i-noor originated at Golconda in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. The Hope Diamond ($ 350 Million) is a large, 45. 52 carat (9. 10 g), it is located in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC-blue Hope Diamond to the naked eye because the number of traces of boron in the crystal structure, but exhibits a red phosphor under ultraviolet light.

Diamonds can be symbols for so many different things so the fact that diamonds were often subject of many famous quotes shouldn't really surprise us.

"Diamonds never leave you...men do..." was a famous quotation by Welsh singer Shirley Bassey. Judging by this quotes it looks like women should rather stick with diamonds than men because men are not as trustworthy as diamonds. These can of course be debated.

"I never hated man enough to give him his diamonds back" is a famous quotation by legendary Hungarian-born actress, and former sex symbol Zsa Zsa Gabor. She only pointed out that well known fact about how difficult it is to separate woman from her jewelry, especially diamond jewelry, which is the best around.

"Big girls need big diamonds" is a famous quotation by acting legend Elizabeth Taylor. You'll barely find "bigger actress" than Liz, so it's really no surprise that her former husband Richard Burton paid entire fortune for huge diamond that was later called Taylor-Burton diamond". "Diamonds are nothing more than chunks of coal that stuck to their job" is a famous quotation by Malcolm Stevenson Forbes, publisher of the famous Forbes magazine.

“I never worry about diets. The only carrots that interest me are the number of carats in a diamond.”
-Mae West certainly had a way with words and who can deny that ever since the Golden Age of Hollywood, and even till today, diamonds are the best way to say “I love you” onscreen and even when the camera stops rolling?

Mark Twain’s famous quote does manage to capture some of a diamond’s most appealing attributes-“Let us not be too particular; it is better to have old second hand diamonds than none at all”.

Eastern civilization appreciates diamonds just as much as the West–possibly more so considering they were the ones to first discover the existence and great potential of the natural diamond. Indeed, it is better to find a diamond with a flaw than just a perfect pebble. Even slightly flawed diamonds can sell for thousands of dollars. In fact, it’s become increasingly rare to find a “perfect” FL (flawless) diamond in this day and age, but the enjoyment that diamonds provide has not diminished at all.

"I have always felt a gift diamond shines so much better than one you buy for yourself!” I completely agree with Mae West. I LOVE MY DIAMOND RING :)

Thanks Nidhi.Singh neat article. I had my first diamond at the age of 17. And I knew it was real, because it cut/scratch glass.
